Better Graphics: God of War III or Uncharted 3?
Weigh in on the comment heard around the 'net.
This was all longtime IGN fan Royce Butler needed to hear. Royce took to Twitter to tell me that I was mad, and I invited him to write in and make his case for God of War III. Both of our arguments are below. Read'em, vote for the game you think looks better, and then sound off in the comments below.
I'm at a loss for words seeing how I'm not a 'wordsmith' and journalist like yourself, but after playing both games this evening after work, there really is not much of an argument to be had for Uncharted 3.
Take for example the times in Uncharted 3 where the camera really zooms in tight as Drake and company squeeze through narrow crevices; that was copied straight from God of War, but Kratos and the torch-lit walls inside of Gaia are much more detailed and use much better lighting effects. Another direct comparison is the London Underground level where Drake, Sully and Cutter are fleeing the baddies. Compare this to any of the levels where Kratos is in a caved setting and the level of detail of the character models, environment and lighting effects are vastly superior on God of War III.
Please describe for me any level or set piece in Uncharted 3 that is as graphically impressive and grand in scale as the intro to God of War III where Kratos is traversing Gaia, Poseidon slays a Titan and Hades is fighting other Titans in the background. Each character model in God of War III is drawn and animated better than their counterparts in Uncharted 3 whether they be main characters bosses, mini-bosses or simple minions.
As great as Uncharted 3 looks, it still looks like a video game whereas God of War III looks like something ILM put together for that crappy Wrath of the Titans movie.
(On a side note, I almost went to see that movie because it looked God of War the Movie, lol.)
Royce, Royce, Royce. Your love for screaming protagonists has clouded your judgment. Yes, God of War III looks amazing -- Sony cut out when I described it as "graphics porn" in my Tester interview -- but Uncharted 3 looks monumentally better.
Describe for you a level in Uncharted 3 that is as graphically impressive and grand in scale like the God of War III intro? Uh, OK. The vista in the French jungle as Nate ledge-shimmies, escaping from a capsized cruise liner, and that little part of the experience where you hang out the back of a plane, blow up the plane, skydive, and then trip out in the desert. I mean, the plane/desert sequence is not only one of the best in gaming, it's one of the prettiest things you'll see on your TV.
I'll admit there's nothing like walking up Gaia in God of War III, but that's because God of War is a fairy tale -- think about that. Santa Monica Studio can just make everything up in God of War; if they need a boss, they make a rock monster with lava veins. Why shouldn't every character and set piece be perfect, then? Watch the God of War III video review and defend the Chimera's textures at the 2-minute 21-second mark or tell me how walking on grates to save Pandora wasn't visually boring.
Uncharted is making a world that's saturated with color and life. It's insanely close to the one we live in (with more climbing). The way the sand cascades as Drake climbs the dunes, the fist bump between Chloe and Sully in London, the textures of the roofs young Drake sprints across -- these are the little details Uncharted 3 nails and that push the visuals beyond the reach of God of War III.
So, what's prettier: God of War III or Uncharted 3?
